** Japanese fishermen begin annual dolphin hunt

A controversial annual dolphin hunt that was depicted in an Oscar-winning documentary has
begun in Japan.

A fleet of six boats herded a group of about 20 bottlenose dolphins into the port of Taiji in
western Japan this morning. Every year the fishermen kill the mammals for their meat, while others are
sold to marine parks.

The annual hunt was the subject of last year's Oscar-winning documentary The Cove, which
sparked allegations of Japan-bashing against the American film makers.

Earlier this year dolphin meat being sold from the traditional harvest was found to contain
high levels of mercury.
